The Ultimate 10-Day Bali Itinerary: Mountains, Islands & Hidden Gems

This Bali itinerary 10 days plan goes deeper than the standard tourist loop. Ten days lets you reach the mountain villages that most visitors skip, take a day trip to an island that feels nothing like Bali, and still have time for the cliffs and temples in the south. I built this route from multiple trips and adjusted every timing detail based on real experience. If seven days gives you a taste, ten days gives you the full picture.

Day 1-3: Ubud

Arriving and First Explorations

Fly into Ngurah Rai International Airport. Complete your e-VOA and tourist tax online before arrival. Pick up an e-Money card at the airport for toll roads and some attractions. The drive to Ubud takes about one and a half hours.

Spend the first afternoon at Tegallalang Rice Terrace. Entry costs 50,000 IDR (~$3). The Bali Swing costs 200,000 IDR (~$11). Go in the late afternoon for softer light. Sacred Monkey Forest sits in central Ubud with entry at 100,000 IDR in low season and 120,000 IDR in high season. E-Money cards are accepted here as a payment option.

Temples and Waterfalls

Tirta Empul purification temple costs 75,000 IDR (~$4). Arrive as early as possible to avoid tour group crowds. Sarong rental is 10,000 IDR. If you have a driver, they can hold your belongings for free instead of paying for a locker.

Tukad Cepung waterfall costs 30,000 IDR (~$2) and rewards morning visitors with a dramatic light beam inside the cave. Tibumana waterfall costs 25,000 IDR (~$1.50) and has a swimmable pool. For a structured day, book the Ubud optimized tour which covers five different route packages.

Mount Batur Sunrise

On your third morning, wake early for Mount Batur. The shared jeep sunrise tour picks you up around 02:00 and includes hot springs afterwards. I would normally choose the sunrise trekking tour but my ankle had other plans, so I went with the jeep instead. Both deliver an unforgettable sunrise above the clouds.

Day 4-5: Munduk

The Mountain Road

Hire a driver for the day. The road from Ubud to Munduk winds through the central highlands for four to five hours. The scenery shifts from rice terraces to volcanic lakes to coffee plantations. Afternoon fog rolls in thick, and temperatures drop noticeably as you climb. Bring a light jacket. This is not the Bali you expect.

My driver suggested we stop for lunch at a small warung on the mountain road. The food was simple and good. Then the owner brought over a small glass and insisted I try the local Arak. I thought it was going to be like a light rice wine. They do not call it the Indonesian Slap for nothing. One sip and I understood exactly where the name comes from. My eyes watered, my throat burned, and my driver could not stop laughing. I spent the rest of the winding road back to Ubud very quiet and very humbled. If someone offers you Arak in Bali, respect it. Take small sips. Or better yet, make sure you are not the one sitting in the front seat of a car about to drive four hours of mountain switchbacks.

Waterfalls and Lake Temples

Sekumpul Waterfall is the most spectacular in Bali. Entry requires a local guide and costs around 450,000 IDR (~$25) per person including the guide fee. The descent is steep and slippery. Banyumala Twin Waterfalls costs 30,000 IDR (~$2) and has a natural swimming pool surrounded by jungle. Munduk Waterfall costs 20,000 IDR (~$1) and sits close to the main road.

Stop at Ulun Danu Beratan Temple on Beratan Lake. The temple appears to float on the water’s surface. Entry costs 75,000 IDR (~$4). If time allows, drive to Jatiluwih UNESCO Rice Terraces at 75,000 IDR (~$4) for some of the most expansive rice paddy views on the island.

Staying Overnight or Day Trip

I did Munduk as a day trip from Ubud. The round trip is long but doable with a driver. If you want to stay overnight, two properties are sitting on my next trip list. Munduk Moding Plantation is famous for its infinity pool above the clouds with views over an organic coffee canyon. Sanak Retreat offers ecological wooden villas among rice terraces with a focus on meditation and slow living.

Day 6: Nusa Penida Day Trip

Getting There

Head to Sanur Port early morning. The new terminal building handles all Nusa Penida departures. Fast boats take 30 to 35 minutes and cost 150,000 to 200,000 IDR (~$8-11) one way. Book the full day Nusa Penida tour for transport and a driver included, or arrange your own boat and hire a driver on the island.

Hiring a driver with a car on Nusa Penida costs 600,000 to 750,000 IDR (~$33-42) for the day. Do not rent a scooter here. The roads are steep, unpaved, and tourist scooter accidents account for the majority of injuries on the island.

The Highlights

Kelingking Beach is the iconic viewpoint. The dinosaur-shaped cliff drops to turquoise water far below. The descent takes about 45 minutes on a steep, exposed trail. Swimming at the bottom is extremely dangerous due to powerful waves. Go for the view, not the beach.

Diamond Beach requires climbing down a rope-assisted staircase carved into the cliff. The beach itself is beautiful and calmer than Kelingking. Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach sit nearby and can be combined in one stop.

Day 7-9: Uluwatu

Cliffs, Temples and Kecak

Move south to Uluwatu. The drive from Ubud takes about two hours. This peninsula delivers Bali’s most dramatic coastline. Visit Uluwatu Temple in the late afternoon. Entry costs 50,000 IDR (~$3). The Kecak fire dance at sunset costs 150,000 IDR (~$8) and fills up fast.

GWK Cultural Park with its massive Garuda statue costs 100,000 to 125,000 IDR (~$6-7).

Beach Days and Beach Clubs

Padang Padang and Thomas Beach both require steep staircase descents but reward you with sheltered coves and crystal water. Uluwatu’s beach clubs perch on cliffsides with infinity pools and cocktail service. Most charge a minimum spend that covers a few drinks and a sunbed.

Day 10: Departure or Buffer

Use your final day based on what you missed. If Jatiluwih did not fit into Munduk day, drive there from Uluwatu. If you skipped a waterfall, fit it in now. A buffer day also works perfectly for a spa morning, last-minute shopping in Seminyak, or simply sitting by your pool doing nothing.

The drive from Uluwatu to the airport takes about 45 minutes outside peak traffic. Give yourself at least two hours before your flight.

Practical Tips

Munduk Jacket. Temperatures drop significantly in the highlands. Bring a light jacket or hoodie. Morning fog and cool air catch many visitors off guard.

Nusa Penida Safety. Do not rent a scooter on Nusa Penida. The roads are dangerous. Hire a driver with a car for the day. It costs roughly the same as a nice dinner and keeps you safe.

Lempuyang (Optional Extra Day). The Gates of Heaven temple sits in east Bali, about 2.5 hours from Ubud and even further from Uluwatu. It requires a dedicated full day. The famous mirror photo can take three to four hours of queuing during peak season. If you want to include it, add it as an extra day from your Ubud base and go at opening time.

E-Visa and Tourist Tax. Complete your e-VOA (500,000 IDR, ~$28) through evisa.imigrasi.go.id and tourist tax (150,000 IDR, ~$8) through lovebali.baliprov.go.id before arrival.
