Navigating the Speedboat and Ferry Routes from Pak Bara Pier
Getting from Hat Yai to Pak Bara
Everything starts at Pak Bara. This small pier in Satun’s La-ngu district is the departure point for the park. Getting here from Hat Yai is straightforward. From Hat Yai Airport or train station, minibuses leave regularly. The ride costs 250 to 300 THB and takes about two hours. The road is mostly flat highway through rubber plantations. The minibus from Hat Yai dropped me right at the pier entrance. No transfers needed. It was the simplest part of the entire journey.

Tickets, Fees and What to Know at the Pier
At Pak Bara you pay three things before boarding. The port tax is 20 THB per person. Cash only. The national park entrance fee is 200 THB for foreign adults. This ticket is valid for 5 days across all park islands. Keep your wristband on at all times. Rangers check it on every island. Then you buy your speedboat ticket at the booking counters near the pier entrance.
The pier itself is small but organized. A few food stalls and a convenience store sit near the entrance. Stock up on snacks and water here. Once you reach the islands, options are limited and prices are higher. A small waiting area has benches and shade. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your boat time. Boarding starts early and they do not wait for late arrivals.
I did not have a vehicle with me. But if you have a long-term rental motorbike, secure parking sits across from the pier. Expect 50 to 100 THB per day.

Speedboat Schedules and Island Connections
Speedboats depart at fixed times: 09:30, 10:30, 11:30, 13:30 and 15:00. The 10:30 and 11:30 boats stop at Koh Tarutao for 15 minutes. This is the easiest way to reach the island. If you are heading to Koh Bulon Lae, different boats run that route. Check all schedules and book your tickets here.
I sat in the front row of the speedboat from Pak Bara. Big mistake. Every time a wave hit, the boat launched into the air and slammed back down. My lower back hurt for a full day afterward. On the return trip I moved to the very back row. The difference was night and day. The back seats absorb the impact so much better. Do not sit at the front of the speedboat. The back rows feel the least amount of impact. I learned this with a sore back.
The ride from Pak Bara to Koh Tarutao takes about one hour. To Koh Bulon it is roughly 45 minutes. From Pak Bara to Koh Lipe takes about 90 minutes. Sea conditions affect the timing. December and January are the calmest months. March and April can get choppy.
On rougher days the crossing gets bumpy. Take motion sickness medication 30 minutes before departure. The back seats help but they are not a cure. Bring a plastic bag just in case. Stay hydrated and focus on the horizon. These simple steps make the speedboat crossing much more bearable.

Planning Your Island to Island Route
Understanding how to get to Koh Tarutao also means knowing what boats do not exist. There is no direct longtail between Koh Bulon and Koh Tarutao. No direct longtail between Koh Bulon and Koh Adang either. If you are island hopping, you rely on the scheduled speedboats through Pak Bara. Plan your route around the timetable.
When I wanted to get from Koh Bulon to Koh Tarutao I discovered there was no direct longtail service. There are no scheduled longtails connecting Koh Bulon to the other islands at all. You have to use the seasonal speedboats. I checked the schedule in advance and planned my route around it. Without checking times first, you could get stuck longer than planned. Know the schedule. Build your route around it.

How to Travel Between Koh Lipe, Koh Tarutao, and Koh Adang by Local Longtail
If you are wondering how to get to Koh Adang from Koh Lipe, the answer is a longtail boat. The Chao Lay fishing cooperative runs boats between the two islands. These are the indigenous sea nomad communities who have lived in these waters for generations. The crossing takes about 15 minutes. During daytime hours it costs 150 to 200 THB per person. After 18:00 the per-person system stops. You charter the whole boat for 500 to 800 THB instead.
Koh Lipe sits between Koh Tarutao and Koh Adang. Many travelers use it as a transit point between the two. I did the same. I took the speedboat from Koh Tarutao to Koh Lipe. Then I hopped on a longtail to Koh Adang. The transition was smooth but timing matters. If your speedboat arrives late, the longtail operators might have stopped for the day. Give yourself a buffer of at least two hours.
Boats to Koh Adang depart from Pattaya Beach on Koh Lipe. Walk to the beach, find the longtail operators and negotiate your crossing. During high season boats leave frequently. In quieter months you may need to wait or pay the charter rate. The operators are friendly but firm on pricing. Do not expect discounts during peak weeks.
When you arrive on Koh Adang, show your park wristband from Pak Bara. The same 200 THB ticket covers entry here. No additional fee required. The ranger at the pier checks every arrival. Everything you need for the hike and activities is in my Koh Adang island guide.

Crossing the International Border: Ferry from Satun to Langkawi Malaysia
If your route continues to Malaysia, two ferry options connect Satun to Langkawi. The mainland ferry departs from Tammalang Pier in Satun town. It leaves at 11:30 Thai time once daily. The crossing takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Tickets cost 550 THB.
During high season a second route runs from Koh Lipe to Langkawi. Ferries depart from Pattaya Beach on Koh Lipe. This is convenient if Koh Adang is your last Thai island. You cross to Koh Lipe by longtail and catch the ferry the same day.
One critical detail caught me off guard. Malaysia is one hour ahead of Thailand. Your ticket shows Thai time. The moment you land in Langkawi the clock jumps forward one hour. Plan any Malaysian connections with the time difference in mind.
You also need to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card before boarding. This is an online form. Fill it out before you reach the pier. Without it, immigration will turn you back at the border. It takes about five minutes. Do not leave it for the last moment.

Practical Tips
Arrive at Pak Bara early. The 09:30 speedboat gives you the most daylight. Buy your port tax and park ticket before boarding. The counters open early.
Sit in the back of the speedboat. The front rows take the worst impact. Save your back and choose the rear.
Get an eSIM before leaving Hat Yai. Island signal is weak across all Satun islands. Data helps for checking schedules and emergencies. Grab a prepaid travel eSIM here.

Book your Hat Yai to Pak Bara transfer early. High season minibuses fill up fast. Reserve your transfer here.
Carry plenty of cash. Port tax, park fees and longtail boats are all cash only. ATMs do not exist on the islands. Withdraw everything in Hat Yai or Pak Bara.
Keep your park wristband on. One ticket covers 5 days. Rangers check it on every island.
I put together a complete where to stay in Satun Islands guide covering every island. And for the full route overview, my Satun itinerary has the day by day plan.
