Official Schedule and Tree Lighting Ceremonies

In 2026, the market runs for 30 days. It opens on Monday, 23 November, and closes on Tuesday, 22 December. Stalls stay open every single day within that window.

The Frankfurt Christmas tree lighting marks the official start. It begins around 5 PM on the Römerberg main stage. First, the mayor of Frankfurt gives a short welcome speech. Then, soloists from the Frankfurt Opera perform festive songs. Finally, thousands of lights switch on across the giant spruce. The crowd cheers, and suddenly the whole square glows.

Right after that, at 6 PM, the tower musicians take over. They play from a small balcony on the Alte Nikolaikirche. Their brass carols echo across the square and officially kick off the season.

Opening night is magical, but it is also crowded. Arrive by 4:30 PM if you want a good view of the tree. Stand near the Alte Nikolaikirche, and you catch both the tree and the brass music. New to the city? My Frankfurt Christmas market guide explains every square and what to find there.

Frankfurt Christmas Market Opening Hours

The Frankfurt Christmas market opening hours stay the same throughout the season. From Monday to Saturday, stalls open at 10:00 and close at 21:00. On Sundays, they open an hour later, at 11:00, and still close at 21:00. These hours apply to every square, including Paulsplatz and Roßmarkt.

Here is the part most visitors miss. The main market closes for good on the evening of 22 December. On 23 December, vendors pack up and take down their stalls. There are no open stalls on 24, 25 or 26 December. That makes Frankfurt different from many German markets, which run until Christmas Eve.

Crowd levels shift a lot across the week. Monday to Thursday, between 10:30 and 14:00, the squares feel calm. You can browse slowly and chat with vendors. Friday and Saturday evenings, on the other hand, get extremely busy. Visitors from the whole region arrive after work.

Want both atmosphere and space? Visit on a weekday morning for shopping. Then return one evening to see the lights at their best. Around 16:30, it gets dark, and every stall starts to glow. Shops on the nearby Zeil keep regular hours, so combining both is easy.

Frankfurt Christmas Market Dates 2026: Event Calendar

Beyond the stalls, Frankfurt keeps a full calendar of local traditions. These Frankfurt Christmas market dates are worth building your trip around. Most events are free and take place outdoors. All you need is a warm drink and a good spot.

Tower Brass Music (Turmbläser)

Every Wednesday and Saturday at 6 PM, brass players climb onto the Alte Nikolaikirche balcony. Their trumpets and horns carry across Römerberg. This tradition goes back to the medieval tower watchmen of Frankfurt.

In 2026, they play on 25 and 28 November. December dates are the 2nd, 5th, 9th, 12th, 16th and 19th. Each performance is short, so arrive a few minutes early.

The Great City Bell Concert (Stadtgeläut)

This is the most moving event of the season. On Saturday, 28 November, from 4:30 to 5 PM, 50 church bells ring together. They come from 10 historic churches across the city center. The Kaiserdom alone contributes nine bells. Paulskirche, St. Katharinen and the Liebfrauenkirche join in, too.

The ringing follows a carefully composed pattern, almost like a symphony. During the concert, all market music on Römerberg stops. The crowd falls quiet and simply listens. Expect big crowds, since this falls on a Saturday. Find a spot on Römerberg or near the Kaiserdom by 4 PM. From there, you hear several churches at once. Arriving that day? Read my Frankfurt Airport to city center guide first.

St. Nicholas Visit

On Sunday, 6 December, St. Nicholas appears on the Römerberg stage around 5 PM. He hands out nuts, fruit and traditional gingerbread to children. Families with young kids should not miss it. Arrive a little early, as children gather close to the stage.

Historic Steam Train Rides

On 12 and 13 December, a historic steam train runs along the Main riverbank. The Historische Eisenbahn Frankfurt association operates the rides. Trains leave from near the Eiserner Steg footbridge every hour, all day. Riding past the skyline in a vintage carriage makes a lovely winter memory. Dress warmly, since the riverside wind feels sharp in December.

Christmas Eve Bells

The market has closed by now, yet the city has one final gift. On 24 December, from 5 to 5:30 PM, church bells ring across Frankfurt once again. Stand near the Kaiserdom or Römerberg to hear it best. It feels quiet and almost private, since most visitors have already left.

Artists’ Christmas Markets at Paulskirche and Römerhallen

Frankfurt also hosts two artists’ markets with their own dates. Both offer free entry, and both feel calmer than the main squares.

Inside Paulskirche, the 104th Artists’ Christmas Market runs from 24 November to 20 December. A jury selects local painters, sculptors and ceramic artists to take part. It opens daily from 12:00 to 20:00. On 20 December, it closes early at 18:00.

I travel light, so I rarely buy anything at markets. My suitcase simply has no room for extras. At the Paulskirche artists’ market, though, I broke my own rule. A local ceramic artist had a small, hand-glazed mug that I could not put down. I bought it and wrapped it in my scarf for the journey. Today, that mug sits on my desk in whatever city I am working from.

Keep one thing in mind. This market closes two days before the main market. Plan your visit before 20 December, or you will miss it entirely.

The second artists’ market fills the Römerhallen, the vaulted halls inside the historic town hall. It runs from 4 to 21 December, also from 12:00 to 20:00. On 21 December, it closes at 18:00. Look for handmade jewelry, glass art and wooden designs here. It also makes a perfect warm escape on a rainy afternoon.

Best Days to Visit Frankfurt’s Christmas Market

Choosing the right days depends on what you want most. Here is how I would plan it.

Love big moments? Time your trip for opening night on 23 November. The bell concert on 28 November is another highlight. Both are unforgettable, but expect dense crowds.

Prefer a calmer experience? Aim for Monday to Thursday in early December. The artists’ markets are open, and the stalls feel manageable. Hotel prices are often lower, too.

Only have one day? Pick a Wednesday or Saturday. You get the full market plus the tower brass music at 6 PM.

Traveling with kids? Plan around 6 December for the St. Nicholas visit. Alternatively, choose 12 or 13 December for the steam train rides.

Most of all, leave some time unplanned. The best moments often happen between the scheduled events.

Whatever you choose, avoid arriving after 22 December. Staying close to Römerberg also makes it easy to pop in and out. Compare neighborhoods in my guide on where to stay in Frankfurt.

Practical Tips

Book your hotel early for event weekends. Opening night and the bell concert weekend sell out fast. Reserve central rooms by early autumn whenever you can.

Mind the Sunday hours. Stalls open at 11:00 on Sundays, an hour later than usual. Plan a slow breakfast first.

Double-check event times on the day. Ceremonies can shift by a few minutes. Ask at your hotel reception before heading out.

Bring cash in small notes. Many stalls prefer cash, especially for small purchases. Carry around €50 to €80 per day to keep things easy.

Check the weather and dress in layers. December evenings in Frankfurt feel damp and cold. Waterproof boots help on wet cobblestones.

Start with a guided walk. A morning tour helps you understand the old town before the evening crowds arrive. Join an English walking tour that runs every day.

Plan regional day trips by car. Frankfurt itself needs no car, since the Altstadt closes to traffic during the market. A car becomes handy for nearby towns, though. Compare rental car options here.

Stay connected for maps and tickets. You will rely on data for directions and transport apps. Set up an eSIM before you fly.

Pair Frankfurt with the Ravenna Gorge market. This Black Forest market sits beneath a stone railway viaduct. It opens Thursday to Sunday, from late November until 20 December. Tickets go on sale online in October and often sell out within hours. Everything you need to secure a spot is in my Ravenna Gorge Christmas market guide.
