Where to Stay in Ton Sai Beach: Best Backpacker Bungalows & Climbing Lodges (2026)

Understanding the Vibe: Ton Sai Beach vs. Railay Beach Accommodation
This is the most important decision. Tonsai and Railay are connected by a jungle trail. The walk takes about 20 minutes over rocks. But the atmosphere could not be more different.
Tonsai is the wild side. Ton sai beach bungalows sit under limestone walls. Reggae bars play until late. Hammocks hang between trees. The crowd is international climbers, long-term backpackers and people escaping the tourist trail. Air conditioning does not exist during the day. ATMs are nonexistent. Luxury amenities are nowhere to be found. That is the whole point.

Railay splits into two sides. Railay West faces the sunset. The best hotels in Railay Beach Krabi line a perfect white sand beach here. Couples and families walk barefoot from their pool to the water. It is polished, quiet and gorgeous.
Railay East faces the mangroves. The pier is here. Walking Street runs along the shoreline with bars, restaurants and small shops. The vibe is livelier and more budget-friendly. This is where younger travelers tend to stay.
You can stay on one side and visit the other daily. The jungle trail between Tonsai and Railay is free. Most people cross it at least once during their stay.

Top Climbing Resorts and Eco-Lodges in Ton Sai Bay
Tonsai is where the climbing community lives. The limestone walls start right behind the bungalows. If you came to Krabi for rock climbing, this is where you stay. The routes start right behind the bungalows.
Tonsai Bay Resort and Dream Valley Review
Tonsai Bay Resort is the original. It sits directly under the main climbing walls. The rooms were recently renovated. A climbing school operates right on the property. If you want the classic Tonsai experience with slightly more comfort, this is it. The restaurant serves solid Thai food. The bar fills up every evening with climbers sharing route stories. (8+)

Dream Valley Resort is where I stayed. It has something most Tonsai places do not. A proper swimming pool surrounded by limestone cliff views. The bungalows are simple but clean. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. It attracts climbers who want adventure during the day. The pool is there to cool off afterward.
I had read on the Booking page that there is no electricity during the day before making my reservation. Dream Valley was a deliberate choice. Working on US hours meant it suited me perfectly. During the day I enjoyed the beach and caught up on sleep. When the power came on in the evening I sat down and worked. The plan worked beautifully. If the electricity schedule does not fit your plans, this place is not for you. But I got exactly what I came to Tonsai for.

3 Brutal Local Realities Before Booking Your Ton Sai Hotel
This section could save your trip. These are the ton sai beach cash realities that most booking pages gloss over.
Limited Electricity and Generator Schedules
Tonsai is not connected to the electrical grid. Properties run on diesel generators. During daytime hours the generators are off. That means no air conditioning during the day. Fans stop working. Your phone cannot charge. Wi-Fi goes down too.
The power comes back on in the evening and runs through the night. If you work remotely on a different time zone, this can work in your favor. But if you expect 24 hour electricity, Tonsai is not your place. Railay properties are connected to the grid and have power around the clock.

The No-ATM and Cash Reality of Ton Sai Bay
There is not a single ATM on Tonsai. Every transaction is cash. Bars, restaurants, climbing schools, boat tickets, laundry. Your credit card is useless here. The nearest ATM is in Ao Nang. Getting there and back by longtail costs money and takes half a day.
Before coming to Tonsai I withdrew plenty of cash in Ao Nang. I knew there were no ATMs here. Everything in Tonsai runs on cash. Bars, restaurants, climbing schools, boat tickets. Your card is useless. The nearest ATM is back in Ao Nang. Getting there and back by boat takes half a day. I learned my lesson about cash on a previous trip. I am quite careful about this now. Withdraw more than you think you need in Ao Nang or Krabi Town. Here, your card is just a piece of plastic.
The Tide Factor
One more reality nobody mentions until you are standing on the beach. At low tide, the water pulls back and exposes sharp coral and rocks. Swimming becomes impossible. The beautiful beach turns into a rocky obstacle course. Check the tide schedule daily. Plan your swimming and snorkeling around the high tide windows. This applies to both Tonsai and parts of Railay East.

Practical Tips
Withdraw all your cash before crossing to Tonsai. Ao Nang and Krabi Town have ATMs everywhere.
Pack light and use a backpack. Wheeled suitcases and the boat landing do not mix.
Charge everything before the generators shut off in the morning. Power banks are essential on Tonsai.
Get an eSIM before you arrive. Signal is weak on Tonsai but data helps for tide apps. Grab a prepaid travel eSIM here.
Book your boat transfer in advance if arriving late. Reserve your Krabi transfer here.
