Cinque Terre Hiking Guide: Best Trails & What to Expect (2026)

Cinque terre hiking is how this coastline was meant to be experienced. Before the trains, before the ferries, the only way between villages was on foot. The trail network still covers over 120 kilometers of paths, from the famous Blue Trail along the coast to the high routes through vineyards and chestnut forests above the villages.

Not all of it is open. Not all of it is easy. And the trail situation changes more often than most guides admit. I hiked the Vernazza to Monterosso section with a blister the size of a lemon on day four and still thought it was worth every step. This guide covers what is actually walkable in 2026, what the conditions are like, and how to plan it without surprises.

In a Rush? La Malà – camere di charme in Vernazza is the top pick for hikers, four rooms with harbor views and owners who know every trail condition in real time. Albergo Barbara puts you directly on the Vernazza harbor square at a budget price. Hotel Locanda Del Sole in Riomaggiore sits on Via Colombo with a sea-view terrace and direct access to the Via dell’Amore trailhead.

Cinque Terre Hiking Trails: Overview & Conditions

The cinque terre hiking trails divide into three categories. The Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro) runs at sea level between the five villages. The Red Trails (Sentieri Rossi) climb to the high routes above the villages through vineyards and forests. The Green Trails connect the hilltop villages and sanctuaries further inland.

The Blue Trail is the most famous and the most crowded. It requires the Cinque Terre Card. Not all sections are currently open — the Manarola to Corniglia coastal section has been closed since a major landslide and will not reopen before 2028. The other sections are open with capacity management on peak dates.

The high routes are free to walk and require no card. They are significantly less crowded than the Blue Trail, offer better views from above the villages, and are the route most locals actually recommend. The SVA (Santuario di Reggio) route and the high route via Volastra are both worth knowing.

Trail conditions change quickly after rain. Always check current status at the national park office at any village station before setting out.

The Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro): Is It Open?

The Sentiero Azzurro in its complete form runs from Riomaggiore to Monterosso along the coastline. Four sections, five villages, around 12 kilometers total. In 2026, three of the four sections are open. One is closed indefinitely.

Riomaggiore to Manarola (Via dell’Amore)

Via dell’Amore is the most famous path in Cinque Terre and the easiest. The 900-meter route runs one-way from Riomaggiore to Manarola along a cliffside path carved into the rock. It reopened in 2024 after 12 years of closure following a landslide.

Access requires a pre-booked time slot as part of the Cinque Terre Card. The old €10 supplement was removed in March 2026. Each 30-minute window admits a maximum of 200 people. Book at card.parconazionale5terre.it when purchasing your card. The path opens at 09:00 and closes at 21:00 in summer, with last entry at 20:30.

The walk takes 20 to 30 minutes at a relaxed pace. The views back toward Riomaggiore from the path are among the best on the entire coastline.

Manarola to Corniglia

This section is closed. A major landslide closed the coastal path between Manarola and Corniglia and reopening is not expected before 2028. The only alternative is the high route via Volastra village, which adds around 600 meters of climbing and two additional hours. Most visitors take the three-minute regional train between these two villages instead.

Corniglia to Vernazza

The Corniglia to Vernazza section is one of the more demanding stretches of cinque terre hiking trails. It covers around 5 kilometers with significant elevation change. The views from the high points on this section are exceptional. Allow two to two and a half hours at a comfortable pace.

This section operates with a capacity limit on peak dates in summer. Check at the Corniglia station office before starting. The trail runs in both directions.

Vernazza to Monterosso

The Vernazza to Monterosso section is the most physically demanding stretch of the Blue Trail. Around 3.5 kilometers, steep climbs in both directions, exposed sections with significant drop-offs. Allow two hours. Proper footwear is not optional on this section.

On peak dates in 2026, this section operates one-way until 14:00: Monterosso to Vernazza only. After 14:00 it reopens in both directions. Check at either station before setting out.

The views from the high points on this section are the best on the entire Blue Trail. Worth every step of the climb.

I hiked this section on day four of my Cinque Terre stay, with a blister that had been building since Corniglia. I stopped three times on the climb out of Vernazza and genuinely questioned every decision that had led me there. Then the path crested and the full coastline opened up in both directions. Monterosso to the north, Vernazza tucked into its cove below, the sea going all the way to the horizon. I sat on a rock for ten minutes and did not move. Worth every step.

Best Easy Cinque Terre Hiking Trails

Not all cinque terre hiking requires fitness or planning. Several routes suit casual walkers and offer strong views without the Blue Trail difficulty.

Via dell’Amore (Riomaggiore to Manarola) — 900 meters, flat, paved, suitable for all fitness levels. The easiest route in the park. Book in advance.

Corniglia to Vernazza lower section — The first 30 minutes from Corniglia are relatively flat before the terrain steepens. This section offers good views without committing to the full two-hour route.

Levanto to Monterosso high route — A moderate 10-kilometer route connecting Levanto to Monterosso along the headland above the coast. Less crowded than anything inside the park and completely free. Allow three hours.

Riomaggiore upper village walks — The terraced paths above Riomaggiore through the vineyard zone are easy to navigate and give you a completely different perspective on the village from above.

Best Challenging Trails in Cinque Terre

Vernazza to Monterosso — The hardest Blue Trail section. Steep, exposed, rewarding. Allow two hours and bring water.

SVA high route (Monterosso to Vernazza via Sanctuary) — The high route above the Blue Trail offers panoramic views over both villages and the full coastline. Around 8 kilometers, significant climbing, three to four hours.

Volastra high route (Manarola to Corniglia substitute) — The only current alternative to the closed Manarola-Corniglia coastal section. Around 600 meters of climbing from Manarola through Volastra village and down to Corniglia. Two and a half to three hours.

Cinque Terre Trail Guide: Tips & What to Pack

The single most important piece of advice for cinque terre hiking is this: check trail conditions at the national park office before you set out, every single day. Conditions change after rain, sections close without much online notice, and the national park office always has the most current information.

Footwear matters on everything except Via dell’Amore. Trail shoes or hiking boots with grip are required for the Corniglia to Vernazza and Vernazza to Monterosso sections. Trainers work on the easier routes. Sandals are not appropriate on any Blue Trail section above sea level.

Carry at least one liter of water per person. There are no water sources on the trail between villages. Some sections have no shade at all between 11am and 3pm in summer. Start early, carry enough water, and finish the harder sections before midday.

The Cinque Terre Card covers all Blue Trail sections plus unlimited train rides (Train Card version). Buy online at card.parconazionale5terre.it the evening before your hiking day. Village ticket offices get long queues by 10am.

Where to Stay for Hikers

Vernazza and Riomaggiore are the two strongest bases for cinque terre hiking. Vernazza puts you at the midpoint of the Blue Trail with direct access to both the Corniglia-Vernazza and Vernazza-Monterosso sections. Riomaggiore puts you at the southern end with Via dell’Amore access and direct train connections to La Spezia.

Practical Tips

Buy your Cinque Terre Card online the evening before. Village ticket offices get long queues by 10am. Buy at card.parconazionale5terre.it and book your Via dell’Amore time slot at the same time.

Check trail conditions at the national park office every morning. Conditions change after rain. The Manarola to Corniglia coastal section is closed until 2028. Other sections can close with little notice. Always confirm before heading out.

Start early on the harder sections. The Vernazza to Monterosso and Corniglia to Vernazza trails get very hot and crowded between 11am and 2pm in summer. Start by 8am to have the trail to yourself and finish before the peak heat.

The Vernazza to Monterosso section is one-way on peak dates until 14:00. The permitted direction is Monterosso to Vernazza only until 14:00. After 14:00 both directions open. Plan accordingly.

Carry more water than you think you need. No water sources exist between villages on the trail. One liter per person minimum. Two liters on hot days.

Rent a car for day trips beyond the park to reach Framura, Tellaro, or Portovenere. Leave it in La Spezia or Levanto and use the train into the park.

Pick up an Italy eSIM before you travel and stay connected from the moment you land. Trail navigation apps work better with a live data connection.
