The Perfect 2 Days in Nafplio Itinerary (2026 Update)

This 2 days in Nafplio itinerary covers the old town, Palamidi, Mycenae, a beach, and two dinners. Nothing is rushed.

I’ve spent more time in Nafplio than in most other Greek destinations. The first time, I booked a hotel outside the old town to save money. I spent 20 minutes every morning and evening walking in and out with my bag. Don’t be me. Stay inside the walls. The extra €20 a night is worth it.

In a Rush? Lock in your hotel before anything else. Grand Sarai Nafplio is the best hotel in the old town (9.4/10, Palamidi views). Amfitriti Palazzo is a small luxury option with sea-view balconies on the Akronafplia hill (9.3/10). For a budget pick with great old town access, Pension Dafni sits directly under Palamidi Fortress. Compare car rental rates before Day 2 — you’ll need one for Mycenae and Karathona Beach.

Day 1: Exploring the Venetian Old Town, 2 Days in Nafplio Itinerary

2 days in Nafplio itinerary , Nafplio 48 hour guide, things to do Nafplio weekend, Mycenae day trip from Nafplio, best hotels Nafplio old town

The first day of this 2 days in Nafplio itinerary belongs entirely to the town. Don’t try to add Mycenae or Epidaurus today. Nafplio deserves a full day without competition from ancient sites.

Morning: Syntagma Square and the Old Town Streets

Arrive the evening before if possible, or by 8am on Day 1. The old town before 9am, when tour buses from Athens haven’t arrived yet, is the best version of Nafplio.

Start at Syntagma Square. The square is flanked by neoclassical mansions, the Venetian Loggia (now the town hall), and a mosque converted into an archaeological museum. Have coffee at one of the square’s cafes. Walk the backstreets — Staikopoulou, Vasileos Konstantinou, and the lanes leading up toward Palamidi are all worth exploring without a map.

Mid-Morning: Palamidi Fortress

Climb Palamidi before the heat peaks and before the tour groups arrive. The fortress has 857 steps from the town below. Alternatively, you can drive up the back road to the top if the climb isn’t appealing. Go by 10am in summer.

The fortress itself is one of the best examples of Venetian military architecture in Greece, built in 1714. The views from the ramparts over the Argolic Gulf and the town below are the best in Nafplio. Allow 90 minutes for the climb, the site, and the descent.

Afternoon: The Peloponnese Folklore Foundation Museum and Bourtzi

The Peloponnese Folklore Foundation Museum on Vasileos Alexandrou Street is one of the best small museums in Greece. The collection covers traditional costumes, embroidery, and domestic objects from across the Peloponnese. Allow 45 minutes. It’s small, well-curated, and almost always quiet.

Bourtzi castle, on the small island in the harbor, is visible from the waterfront promenade. Boat trips from the harbor run throughout the day for a small fee. However, the island itself is modest — the view of Bourtzi from the waterfront is more impressive than the view from inside it. Take the boat only if you have time to spare.

Afternoon: Arvanitia Promenade

The Arvanitia Promenade is a rocky coastal path below Palamidi that runs from the old town waterfront along the cliff face. The walk takes about 30 minutes one way. At the end of the path, a hidden staircase leads directly into the sea. Go in the late afternoon when the heat has dropped. Furthermore, if the light is right, the walk back toward town with Palamidi above and the Argolic Gulf below is one of the most scenic short walks in Greece.

Where to Stay in Nafplio: Old Town Hotels

For a 2 days in Nafplio itinerary, staying inside the old town walls is the only sensible choice. The old town is closed to vehicle traffic, so park at the free harbor lot and use a wheeled bag.

Grand Sarai Nafplio is the standout option. Built in the 17th century, it’s one of the oldest buildings in Nafplio still operating as a hotel. I stayed here on my most recent visit: the rooftop breakfast with Palamidi rising behind you and the Argolic Gulf in front is the best way to start any morning in this town. Booking.com rating: 9.4/10.

Amfitriti Palazzo sits on the Akronafplia hill, 300 meters from Arvanitia Beach. The rooms have spa baths and sea-view balconies. The hill location means a few extra steps to the town center, but the views compensate considerably. Rating: 9.3/10.

Ilion Hotel occupies a 19th-century mayor’s mansion on Syntagma Square. The rooms are filled with antiques from the owner’s personal collection and the hammam is a genuine luxury after a day of climbing. Rating: 9.0/10.

Hotel Ippoliti is the old town option with a pool, which matters in July and August. Tuscan-themed decor, jacuzzi rooms, and a central location near the harbor. Good value for couples.

Carpe Diem Boutique Hotel is a design-focused option on a quiet street near Arvanitia Beach. Soundproofed rooms, strong Wi-Fi (useful for remote workers), and a good breakfast.

Pension Dafni is the best value pick in the old town. Family-run, directly under Palamidi Fortress, and 200 meters from Arvanitia Beach. Ideal if you want character without the boutique price.

Dinner: Waterfront or Staikopoulou Street

Nafplio has two reliable dinner zones. The waterfront promenade has the views; Staikopoulou Street, the main restaurant strip one block back, has better food-to-price ratios. Specifically, the restaurants on Staikopoulou serve better quality Greek food than the harbor-facing spots, which charge a premium for the sea view.

Accordingly, eat on Staikopoulou and walk the waterfront for a drink afterward. That’s the correct order.

Day 2: Ancient Ruins and Beach Relaxation,

Morning: Mycenae

Day 2 of this 2 days in Nafplio itinerary begins with the best version of Mycenae: 8am, before tour groups arrive from Athens.

Mycenae is 20 minutes from Nafplio by car. The Lion Gate and the Treasury of Atreus are the two essential stops. In 2026, the Treasury requires a separate timed slot from the main site ticket — book both at hhticket.gr before leaving home. Tour groups arrive between 9:30 and 11am. Therefore, arriving at 8am gives you the site essentially alone for the first 90 minutes.

If you prefer a guided experience with historical context, this guided tour from Nafplio covers Mycenae and Epidaurus in one day with a licensed archaeologist and includes private transport.

Mid-Morning: Epidaurus (Optional)

Epidaurus is 30 minutes from Nafplio and 30 minutes from Mycenae. If your schedule allows, combining Mycenae in the morning with Epidaurus at midday is manageable in one day. However, adding Epidaurus to a Day 2 that also includes a beach afternoon means a genuinely full schedule. Be realistic about pace.

The theater at Epidaurus is the best-preserved ancient theater in the world. The acoustics are extraordinary — a coin dropped at the center can be heard from the top row. Allow 90 minutes for the site.

Afternoon: Karathona Beach

Karathona is the closest sandy beach to Nafplio, 4km from the old town by car or a pleasant 45-minute coastal walk. The bay is calm, the water is clean, and the beach has a taverna for lunch. In contrast to the rocky platform at Arvanitia, Karathona has proper sand and calm, shallow water suitable for swimming.

Go in the early afternoon. The beach is quietest between 2pm and 5pm when the midday heat passes and most day-trippers are already heading back to Athens. Additionally, the walk back to Nafplio along the coastal path in the late afternoon is one of the most pleasant ways to end a trip.

Evening: A Romantic Dinner in Nafplio

The second evening of this 2 days in Nafplio itinerary is for a longer, unhurried dinner. Nafplio has several restaurants worth spending two hours in. The neoclassical mansions converted into dining rooms along the quiet streets near Syntagma Square are the best setting. Go at 9pm, order slowly, and walk the old town streets afterward when the day tourists are gone.

If wine is part of your plan, Nemea is 40 minutes from Nafplio. This guided wine tasting from Nafplio visits two award-winning wineries in the Nemea region and could be an excellent half-day addition if your schedule has flexibility on Day 2.

Practical Tips for the 2 Days in Nafplio Itinerary

Book the Treasury of Atreus slot at Mycenae before you arrive. In 2026, this is a separate timed booking from the main site ticket at hhticket.gr. Missing this detail is the single most common complaint from Mycenae visitors.

Use a wheeled bag. The old town is cobblestone and car-free. A wheeled bag makes the walk from the harbor parking to your hotel manageable. A hard-sided roller on Nafplio’s cobblestones is not.

Rent a car for Day 2. The KTEL bus works for getting to Nafplio. However, reaching Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Karathona Beach on Day 2 requires a car. Compare car rental rates early and confirm IDP requirements before departure. Alternatively, compare across all agencies for the best rate.

Arrive the evening before if possible. Starting a 2 days in Nafplio itinerary with a full Day 1 rather than a late arrival morning changes the whole experience. The evening harbor walk, a first Nafplio dinner, and waking up already inside the old town is the right way to begin.
