The Ultimate Guide to Sinaia: Best Things to Do & Royal Castles

Sinaia sits in the Prahova Valley surrounded by Carpathian peaks. A small mountain town with a royal past. King Carol I chose this valley for his palace. A 17th-century monastery gave the town its name. Today the things to do in Sinaia revolve around those two anchors. History below, mountains above, and a gondola connecting both.

This guide covers Peles Castle, the monastery, and the gondola. It also explains how to reach Sinaia from Brasov by train. My Brasov 3-day winter itinerary puts Sinaia in the wider trip context.

⚡ In a Rush? I stayed at Hotel Boutique Belvedere, a small property near Peles Castle with valley views and zero chain-hotel atmosphere. Budget travelers should look at Hotel Carpathia near the train station. Accommodation details are in my Sinaia accommodation guide.

Exploring the Prahova Valley’s Royal Landmarks

Two castles and a monastery make Sinaia unique in Romania. They sit within walking distance of each other. An entire morning covers all three. Peles Castle is the headline. Pelisor hides quietly behind it. The monastery anchors the town center below.

Peles Castle & Pelisor Castle: Tickets, Hours & Insider Tips

Peles Castle is the reason most visitors come to Sinaia. King Carol I of Romania built it between 1873 and 1914. It was the first royal residence in Europe with full electric lighting. A central vacuum system ran through the walls. The peles castle history spans German Neo-Renaissance architecture and obsessive royal engineering. Every room tells a different story.

Standard entry costs 100 RON for the ground and first floors. Retired visitors pay 50 RON. Students pay 25 RON. English guided tours start at 09:45 and run hourly. The last tour begins at 15:15. Protective shoe covers are mandatory at the entrance. A photography card costs 35 RON if you want to shoot inside.

The critical rule: book your timed slot in advance at bilete.peles.ro. Daily capacity is capped at 2,000 visitors. Once slots fill, the door closes.

I showed up at Peles Castle without a reservation. The staff told me the day was full. A 2,000-visitor daily limit and timed entry slots meant no walk-ins. I booked online for the next morning and walked in without a problem. Do not show up without a reservation. Book your time slot on the website in advance. The castle is closed every Monday and Tuesday. If your schedule cannot fit a second day, a guided tour handles the logistics.Book a Peles, Bran & Cantacuzino tour and skip the reservation stress.

Pelisor Castle sits just uphill from Peles. Queen Marie designed the interiors in Art Nouveau and Vienna Secession style. Gold leaf covers the walls of the main salon. Entry costs 30 RON. Daily capacity is 1,500 visitors. Same opening hours as Peles. Most visitors skip Pelisor entirely. That is a mistake. The intimacy here feels completely different from the grand halls below.

Both castles close every Monday and Tuesday. Peles also closes through November for annual maintenance. Check dates before planning.

The Historic 17th-Century Sinaia Monastery

The monastery gave Sinaia its name. Serdar Mihail Cantacuzino built it in 1695. His pilgrimage to Saint Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai inspired the project. Two courtyards form the complex. The Old Church (Biserica Veche) dates to 1695. Its larger counterpart, the Great Church, was added in 1846. Romania’s first religious museum sits inside the grounds. King Carol I’s gold-embossed handwritten Bible is kept here.

Entry costs a symbolic 10 RON. The monastery sits in the town center, downhill from the castles. You pass it on the walk between the train station and Peles. Most visitors rush past on their way up. Stop here first. The painted frescoes inside the Old Church deserve your time.

Mountain Viewpoints and Carpathian Adventures

Riding the Sinaia Gondola to Cota 1400 & Cota 2000

The Telegondola Sinaia carries you from the town at Cota 1000 to Cota 2000. Two stages. The first stops at Cota 1400. From there, the second stage reaches the open plateau above the tree line. A full round trip costs 95 to 110 RON. Single stage tickets run about 50 RON. Parking at the base station costs 30 RON per day.

Cota 2000 sits on an exposed plateau. When wind speed exceeds 60 km/h, the cabins stop for safety. Check gondolasinaia.ro or sinaiago.ro before heading up. Live cameras and wind sensors show real-time conditions.

I took the gondola on a cloudy morning. At the base station, fog blocked everything. Visibility was maybe 20 meters. Then the cabin punched through the cloud layer. Everything changed in seconds. Blue sky above. A sea of white clouds below. The mountain peaks broke through like islands. The temperature dropped instantly but the view was worth every shiver. Sinaia without the gondola misses the best part.

In winter, Cota 1400 and Cota 2000 offer ski runs and snowshoe trails. Summer brings hiking across the Bucegi plateau. The gondola works year-round unless wind shuts it down.

How to Visit Sinaia on a Day Trip from Brasov by Train

A Sinaia day trip from Brasov works perfectly by train. Over 20 InterRegio services run daily between the two stations. The ride takes 45 to 55 minutes. A one-way second-class ticket costs 20 to 26 RON.

From Sinaia station, you have two options uphill. Walk through Dimitrie Ghica Park on the historic stone staircase. It takes 25 to 30 minutes and the route is beautiful. Or take the T2 minibus from the station entrance. A taxi to the castle gate costs about 20 RON.

A comfortable day trip plan: catch the morning train from Brasov. Visit the monastery first. Walk up to Peles and Pelisor. Have lunch in town. Take the gondola in the afternoon. Return by evening train. That covers the main things to do in Sinaia in one full day.

Driving is another option. Compare rental prices here if you prefer your own schedule. Castle parking costs 10 to 15 RON per hour. The road from Brasov takes about 50 minutes.

The Prahova Valley continues south toward Busteni and Predeal. My Busteni and Predeal guide covers those towns if you want to extend the trip.

Practical Tips

Reservation is everything. Peles Castle turns away hundreds of visitors without timed slots. Book at bilete.peles.ro days before your visit. This is the single most important tip in this guide.

eSIM. Mobile data helps with gondola status checks and train schedules. Pick up an eSIM before your trip to stay connected in the valley.

Dress warm at Cota 2000. The plateau sits above the tree line. Wind and cold hit harder than in town. Bring a windproof layer even if the base station feels mild.

Shoe covers. Peles Castle requires protective galos at the entrance. They provide them but the queue slows you down. Arriving early helps.

November closure. Peles closes for the entire month of November for maintenance. Pelisor closes early October to early November. Do not plan a castle visit during these windows.
