The Complete Guide to Busteni & Predeal: Best Things to Do in the Carpathians
Most travelers rush past Busteni and Predeal on the train to Brasov. Two small mountain towns in the Prahova Valley. Same train line. Different character. Busteni has a castle that Netflix put on the map. A monastery sits at the foot of a cliff next to it. Predeal has Romania’s highest altitude town center and night skiing under floodlights. The things to do in Busteni and Predeal deserve more than a glance through the train window. My Brasov winter itinerary puts these towns in the wider route.

Famous Castles & Cultural Spots in Busteni
Busteni is small. You can walk the town in an hour. But the things to do in Busteni punch well above the town’s size. A royal castle and a cliffside monastery sit minutes apart.
Cantacuzino Castle: Visiting the “Wednesday” Series School Ground
Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino built this castle in 1911 on the Zamora ridge. He was a former Romanian Prime Minister. The Neo-Romanian architecture mixes stone, carved wood, and stained glass. Netflix filmed the Nevermore Academy exterior here during Wednesday’s first season. The second season moved to Ireland but the castle remains open.
My nieces are obsessed with Wednesday. They made me watch every episode. When I arrived at Cantacuzino, my first thought was simple. I had seen this place before. The Nevermore Academy facade played in my head frame by frame. Standing in front of the real building felt surreal. Park entrance and indoor guided tour have separate tickets. Check the prices before you go.

Ticket options start at 25 RON for park-only entry. A combo covering the guided tour, gallery, and park costs 85 RON. The Wednesday-themed “Secret Room” photo area adds 15 RON. Tours run hourly starting at 10:05. All tours are in Romanian. Foreign visitors get a QR-based audio guide at the entrance.
Hours run Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 19:00. Weekends stay open until 20:00. Parking costs 20 RON with a 4-hour limit. Prefer not to drive? A guided castle tour from Brasov covers Cantacuzino, Peles, and Bran in one day.

Caraiman Monastery & The Famous Heroes’ Cross On The Peak
Mănăstirea Caraiman sits at the foot of the Caraiman cliffs. Entry is free. The monastery is small but its setting is dramatic. Vertical rock walls tower above the buildings.
But the real landmark sits on top. Crucea Caraiman stands at 2,291 meters. It honors World War I casualties. No memorial cross sits higher anywhere in the world. Steel construction holds it against mountain winds.

In summer, the Busteni-Babele cable car reaches the plateau. From there you hike to the cross. Winter changes everything. Blizzards, ice, and avalanche risk make the route dangerous. The cable car runs only in calm weather. Tuesdays close for maintenance.
The safest winter view comes from below. The garden terrace at Cantacuzino Castle offers a clear line to the peak. Bring binoculars on a clear day. Among the things to do in Busteni, this view takes the least effort.

Winter Sports & Mountain Activities in Predeal
Skiing and Night Skiing at Clabucet Ski Slope
Predeal sits at 1,032 meters. It is Romania’s highest town. That altitude gives it a longer ski season than the rest of the valley. Snow arrives earlier. It stays later. The things to do in Predeal center around the Clăbucet slope.
Pârtia Clăbucet sits in the heart of town. The train station is walking distance. Modern floodlights make night skiing possible every evening. Night sessions run 17:00 to 21:00. Day passes cost 180 to 200 RON. Night cards run 100 to 120 RON. The chairlift operates 09:30 to 16:30 during daytime.

Standing in Predeal, memories from my first time in this region came flooding back. Years ago, around 100 volunteer students from across the world gathered here for training. We stayed at Eden Resort, one of the old hotels in the area. Room number one hosted parties that lasted until sunrise. Campfire nights ran even longer. Then there were the Romanian dances we tried so hard to learn. We were terrible but nobody cared. Instead of drowning in nostalgia, I tried the night skiing at Clăbucet. When the floodlights came on, the slope transformed. Less crowded. Sharp light and shadow contrasts. Silence all around. Do not only think of ski resorts in daylight. Predeal’s night skiing is a separate experience entirely.
Accommodation details are in my Predeal and Busteni accommodation guide. One stop south sits Sinaia. My Sinaia travel guide covers Peles Castle and the gondola.

How to Get from Bucharest to Sinaia & Prahova Valley
Skip the car for this route. The DN1 highway clogs every weekend. A drive that should take 2 hours stretches to 4 or 5 in traffic. Trains are faster, cheaper, and stress-free.
CFR Călători runs InterRegio services from Bucharest Gara de Nord. Private operators Astra Trans Carpatic and Softrans add comfortable alternatives.
From Bucharest: Sinaia takes 1 hour 20 minutes. Busteni arrives in 1 hour 35. Predeal takes 1 hour 50. Book at bilete.cfrcalatori.ro a few days ahead. Friday afternoon departures and Sunday evening returns sell out regularly.
All three towns sit on the same line. Brasov is 20 minutes north of Predeal. The entire valley works as one connected corridor. Hopping between towns takes minutes. Compare rental prices if you still prefer driving.

Practical Tips
Castle timing. Cantacuzino tours start every hour at :05. Arrive 15 minutes early to buy tickets. Last weekday tour runs at 19:05.
Night skiing gear. Clăbucet rents equipment at the base. Goggles help with floodlight glare. Slopes are quieter and colder after dark.
eSIM. Train schedules and castle hours shift seasonally. Pick up an eSIM before your trip to check updates on the go.
Winter safety at Caraiman. Do not attempt the hike to the Heroes’ Cross without mountaineering equipment. Avalanche risk is real. Watch from Cantacuzino’s terrace instead.
Weekend trains. Friday departures from Bucharest fill fast. Book days in advance. Sunday evening returns are equally crowded.
