The Doi Inthanon day trip is the most rewarding full-day adventure outside the city. It takes you to the highest point in Thailand at 2,565 meters. The air is cool, the forest is dense and the views stretch for miles. Entry costs 300 THB for adults and 150 THB for children. Vehicles pay an additional 30 THB.

The drive up to the summit passes several waterfalls along the way. The temperature drops noticeably as you climb. At the top it can be 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the city. Bring a light jacket even in high season. The summit itself is quiet and surrounded by dense forest. A short boardwalk takes you to the highest point marker. Most visitors rush through it. Take your time and breathe the mountain air.

Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail

This 3 kilometer trail is the highlight of Doi Inthanon. It winds through a cloud forest above the tree line. A Hmong guide is mandatory. The cost is 200 THB per group, not per person. The trail closes between June and October for the rainy season.

I hiked the Kew Mae Pan trail with a Hmong guide. Throughout the walk he pointed out every plant in the cloud forest. Which leaves are medicinal, which flowers only bloom at this altitude. At one point the clouds parted and a valley appeared below us. He stopped and said “this is the best photo spot but everyone walks past it.” If you hike this trail alone you will see beautiful scenery. But with a Hmong guide you actually understand the forest. Twin Pagodas

The King and Queen Twin Pagodas sit near the summit. They were built to honor Thailand’s late King and Queen. Entry costs an additional 100 THB per person. The architecture is elegant and the surrounding gardens are immaculate. On a clear day you can see the mountain range stretching to the horizon. Visit in the morning for the best light and fewer visitors.

Sticky Waterfalls (Bua Tong)

Sticky Waterfalls Chiang Mai is one of the most unusual natural attractions in Thailand. The waterfall is covered in calcium carbonate deposits. This mineral creates a rough, grippy surface on the rocks. The result is a waterfall you can climb barefoot without slipping. Even with water rushing over your feet.

The falls sit about 60 km north of Chiang Mai. Entry is completely free. Changing rooms and lockers are available at the base. Wear water shoes if you have them. Barefoot works too but shoes give extra grip. Bring a towel and dry clothes for the drive back. The best time to visit is weekday mornings when the falls are quieter.

I went to Sticky Waterfalls with a few friends I had met at Yellow. When we arrived we took off our shoes and stepped into the water. The limestone texture gripped our feet. Water was flowing over us but slipping was impossible. We climbed up step by step. At the top we sat down and looked out over the forest below. This experience is hard to explain because it goes against logic. You are walking on wet rock but you are not slipping. Entry is free, there are changing rooms and lockers. It is 60 km north of Chiang Mai. Going with a group of friends makes it twice as fun. Honestly though, it felt like running an experiment. And I cannot say I was not scared. The last thing I needed was to injure myself while trying to have a good time.

Chiang Rai White Temple Day Trip

Chiang Rai is three hours from Chiang Mai by car. A full day tour covers the White Temple and the Blue Temple in a single trip. The White Temple entry fee was raised to 200 THB in 2026. The ticket includes access to the Cave of Art gallery inside the complex.

The White Temple is one of the best day trips from Chiang Mai for architecture lovers. The detail on every surface is astonishing. Plan at least two hours to explore properly.

The Blue Temple sits a short drive from the White Temple. It is newer but equally stunning. Deep blue walls covered in gold detail surround a massive white Buddha. It is free to enter and far less crowded than the White Temple.
