How to Get to Koh Lanta South: National Park Routes & Local Transfer Rates

Getting from Krabi airport to Koh Lanta is straightforward. Getting from lanta old town to national park without an accident is the part most guides skip. I came here with a group of friends from Krabi. We took the shared minibus, waited in a ferry queue, and spent three hours wondering if we made the right call. We did. But the real transport challenge starts once you reach the island. This guide covers every route, every fare, and the scooter warnings that could save your trip.

In a Rush? The only five-star resort on the island is Pimalai Resort & Spa, with a private beach and VIP speedboat transfers from Krabi. Alama Sea Village Resort delivers a hillside infinity pool overlooking Kantiang Bay. I stayed at Bakantiang Resort and got the same sunset view at a fraction of the price.

Getting to Koh Lanta: Van Transfers from Krabi Airport (KBV)

All roads to Koh Lanta start at Krabi Airport. The island connects to the mainland through a car ferry between the coast and Koh Lanta Noi, then the Siri Lanta Bridge links Koh Lanta Noi to Koh Lanta Yai. Every transfer crosses both.

Shared Minibus

The most popular option for budget travelers. Shared minibuses depart from the arrivals terminal and cost 335 to 800 THB per person depending on operator and season. Travel time runs two and a half to three and a half hours. The variation comes from the ferry queue. During peak season, cars stack up at the crossing and you sit and wait.

We took the shared minibus from Krabi with my group of friends. The ride itself was fine, air-conditioned and comfortable. Then we hit the ferry queue. Forty minutes sitting in the van watching cars inch forward. Total travel time hit three hours. Nobody warned us. If you take the minibus, factor in the ferry wait. It adds thirty to sixty minutes on busy days.

Private Taxi or VIP Van

A private vehicle costs 2.000 to 2.937 THB for the whole car. It seats up to four comfortably. The driver takes you directly to your hotel, even if it sits at the far south of the island near Kantiang Bay. Travel time drops to one and a half to two hours because private vehicles get priority boarding on the ferry. Book your transfer through 12go to lock in your fare before landing.

If you split the cost between three or four people, the per-person price approaches the shared minibus. Worth considering for groups heading to the south coast.

High Season Speedboat

Between November and April, speedboat transfers run from Krabi to Koh Lanta’s southern piers. The ticket costs 1.400 to 2.500 THB per person. You take a minibus from the airport to a mainland pier, then board the speedboat. Total journey takes about two and a half hours. Pimalai Resort operates its own VIP speedboat service for guests, delivering them directly to the resort’s private beach.

Lanta Old Town to National Park: Scooter Safety and Driving Conditions

The distance from lanta old town to national park is about 20 kilometers. Most travelers rent a scooter to cover it. The ride takes roughly 40 minutes. For the first half, the road behaves normally. Past Klong Nin, everything changes.

The Dangerous South Road

South of Klong Nin, the terrain turns mountainous. Road gradients exceed 20 percent on several stretches. Sharp blind corners appear without warning. The most critical detail is the lack of street lighting. After sunset, this road goes completely dark. No lamps, no reflectors, nothing.

One evening we rode back from Kantiang Bay to Klong Nin as a group. The sun had already set. Halfway through a blind curve, a pickup truck came around the corner and its headlights hit us straight in the eyes. I braked on instinct but the downhill gradient made the tires slip for a second. Nothing happened, nobody fell, but my heart was pounding for the rest of the ride. After that night, none of us touched the south road after dark again. This stretch accounts for most of the serious tourist accidents on the island. Ride it during daylight only.

Scooter Rental Rules

Daily rates range from 200 to 350 THB for a 125cc Honda Click. Shops will ask for your passport as a deposit. Do not hand it over. Offer a cash deposit of 1.500 to 2.500 THB instead and leave a photocopy of your passport.

You need an International Driving Permit with an A-class motorcycle endorsement. A regular car license is not valid. Police run checkpoints along the main road. Fines for no helmet or no license range from 500 to 1.000 THB. More importantly, riding without the correct license voids your travel insurance completely.

Film a detailed video of the scooter before you ride away. Walk around it slowly, capture every scratch and dent. Show the footage to the shop owner. This simple step protects you from damage disputes when you return the bike.

Local Transport: Tricycle Rates and Taxi Options to Avoid Getting Ripped Off

Koh Lanta has no metered taxis. There is no Grab. No Bolt. Transport relies entirely on songthaews (covered pickup trucks) and motorized tricycles (tuk-tuks).

Saladan to Kantiang Bay

The main route covers roughly 25 kilometers from Saladan Pier in the north to Kantiang Bay in the south. Drivers charge fixed fares that start high and come down with negotiation. Expect to pay 300 to 500 THB for a one-way trip to Kantiang Bay.

Short Hops Between Bays

Moving between nearby beaches costs 50 to 150 THB per trip. Always confirm one thing before you get in: is the fare per person or per vehicle? Some drivers quote a per-person rate that multiplies fast with a group. Others quote a total vehicle fare. Ask clearly, agree clearly, then get in.

Getting to the National Park Without a Scooter

If you prefer not to ride, arrange a return trip with a tuk-tuk driver. Agree on a pickup time at the park before they leave. A return trip from Kantiang Bay to the national park and back costs roughly 400 to 600 THB. Your hotel reception can usually arrange this. Practical Tips

Ferry Queue Strategy. The car ferry between the mainland and Koh Lanta Noi creates bottlenecks during peak season. Private vehicles get priority. If you take a shared minibus, add thirty to sixty minutes to your estimated travel time.

Cash Before the South. ATMs on the island charge a flat 220 THB per withdrawal for foreign cards. Always decline the dynamic currency conversion option at the machine. The south coast runs almost entirely on cash, from the national park gate to beach restaurants to tuk-tuk fares. Withdraw enough before heading south.

Passport Safety. Never leave your original passport with a scooter rental shop. Offer cash deposit instead. Losing access to your passport creates serious problems if you need medical care or police assistance.

Stay Connected. Download a Thailand eSIM before your trip so you have data for navigation. Signal drops on parts of the south coast road, so download offline maps at your hotel before heading out.

Where to Sleep. For the full hotel breakdown at Kantiang Bay, read Where to Stay in Kantiang Bay.

Koh Kradan Day Trip. Several tour operators run day trips from Koh Lanta to Koh Kradan as part of the 4 Islands route. If you want to go independently, read How to Get to Koh Kradan from Koh Mook for boat options and park fee details.
