The Legendary Eat Pray Love Villa (Penestanan)

How I Ended Up Here

The first time I came to Bali, my only goal was a visa run to extend my Thai visa. I had already done Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, and I was looking for somewhere different. The second time I came back, I spent about a month villa-hopping around the island.

Let me be honest with you. I am a hopeless romantic but also probably the most unromantic person you will ever meet. While planning my villa hops, friends kept telling me I had to visit Liyer House for the blessing and palm reading. After a million jokes about it and finding myself watching Eat Pray Love for the millionth time, I started researching. I had heard before that the actual movie house was available to rent. And there it was. Two nights available on exactly my travel dates. It is easier to find availability these days. I think people’s faith in love might be fading.

I went back and forth between one night or two. Partly out of indecision, partly because I wanted to actually enjoy the place rather than rush through it. I booked two nights.

Arriving at the Villa

As your dates approach, Komang contacts you through Airbnb with detailed directions, phone numbers, the Google Maps pin, and even photos of the route. If you arrive by scooter, you can ride all the way to the door. If you take a taxi, the driver has to drop you on the main road because the path to the villa is a narrow walkway. You walk the rest with your luggage. Every beautiful thing in Bali comes with a price. Like I always say, Bali comes with a price.

It helps to confirm your exact check-in time so the staff can meet you, explain everything, and then leave. After that, you are alone with the villa that once lived in everyone’s romantic fantasy.

Living in the Eat Pray Love Villa

If you are like me and plan to stay in for two days without leaving, the villa has everything you need. Tea, coffee, water, all stocked. Gojek works well in the area, and Komang’s assistant recommends great spots nearby.

The villa is a private rental but not everyone knows that. Film fans who have no idea it is an Airbnb do show up. Lock the front gate behind you the moment you walk in. It is rare, but people have knocked on the door. When you step out to grab your Gojek delivery, you might find someone outside photographing the entrance.

I would never normally allow strangers in, but two Russian travellers knocked so enthusiastically that I felt bad turning them away. They had come all that way and they were clearly two romantics. They were staying at Liyer House down the road. I let them take photos on the veranda at least. Afterwards, the idea of people photographing the house while I was inside bothered me for a while. If someone has ever posted a photo of the most romantic villa in the world with a girl in Tweety pyjamas sitting on the veranda, that is me. The feeling faded eventually and I went back to enjoying the house.

The Clichés I Did (All of Them)

The decor is quite different from the movie, but the overall vibe has not been lost. There is a photo album with key scenes filmed at the house, copies of the Eat Pray Love book in different languages, and I heard they have now added a projector too. Every cliché in the book? Done. The movie got rewatched. The fish in the pool got fed while Josh Rouse’s Flight Attendant played on my phone. Meditation was attempted in the meditation area even though my ADHD brain fought me the entire time. Hours disappeared on the swing staring at the view. There is not a single cliché photo I did not take. Just because I do not like sharing does not mean I will not feed the romantic inside me.

Eat Pray Love house Bali , Is It Worth the Price?

Let me be clear about something. As someone who has stayed in many different places across Bali, this is essentially a classic Balinese house. If you are going to complain afterwards that it was not worth the price, you would be right in a purely practical sense. There are better properties at this price point across the island.

Eat Pray Love house Bali 🙂 Clichés

But this place is famous because of the film. It is an experience, not just accommodation. And a small confession. I think the house has an incredible energy. It could be from the years of prayers offered inside it. Perhaps the thousands of couples who found love left something behind. Or maybe it is simply our own emotional investment in the movie. I can tell you this much. The more excited you feel at check-in, the sadder you feel at check-out.

Two nights is exactly the right amount if you want one day to take all the photos and another day to simply enjoy being there. I was very happy with my decision. One night would definitely not have been enough for me.

Liyer Spirit House (Pengosekan)

Liyer Spirit House sits in the Pengosekan area of Ubud. Ketut Liyer’s family courtyard has been converted into a small guesthouse with traditional stone carvings and a garden pool. The two Russian travellers I met at my villa were staying here. If you want to combine the villa experience with Liyer’s compound, both are in Ubud and close to each other.

Ketut Liyer Day Trip

I visited Liyer House during my stay in Bali. It felt like the natural thing to do since it is just down the road. Ketut Liyer passed away years ago but his son Wayan continues the tradition. A palm reading, aura reading, and blessing costs around 650,000 IDR, roughly 36 dollars. The session lasts about three to five minutes.

I will be honest. Wayan says almost the same thing to about one in every four visitors. If you are going to call that a scam, do not go. Save your money. But if you are going for the experience, to breathe the atmosphere, to sit in that courtyard where it all started, and to feel whatever energy that place carries, then it is worth the visit. Just manage your expectations. This is not a life-changing prophecy. It is a moment in a story that millions of people fell in love with.

2 Brutal Realities You Must Know Before Booking

The Truth About Palm Reading Sessions

The sessions with Wayan last three to five minutes. The courtyard operates on high tourist turnover. You enter, sit down, receive your reading and blessing, and leave. The phrases follow recognizable patterns. If you arrive expecting a deep mystical encounter, you will be disappointed. If you arrive expecting a nostalgic moment connected to a film you love, you will leave satisfied.

Getting There: Narrow Lanes and Access Issues

Both the Eat Pray Love villa and Liyer House sit in Ubud’s Penestanan and Pengosekan areas. These neighbourhoods are built along narrow lanes called gangs. Cars cannot enter. Taxis drop you on the main road. From there, you walk 200 to 500 meters on a path that only scooters and pedestrians can use. If you have heavy luggage, contact your host before arrival. The villa staff meet you at the entrance and help carry your bags.

Practical Tips

Book Early. The Eat Pray Love villa Bali listing on Airbnb fills up during peak months. Check availability as early as possible and book two nights for the full experience.

Lock the Gate. The moment you enter the villa, lock the front gate behind you. Film fans occasionally knock without knowing it is a private rental.

Confirm Check-in Time. Staff wait for your arrival, show you around, and then leave. A confirmed time avoids waiting on both sides.

Scooter Recommended. A scooter makes reaching the villa and Liyer House much easier through the narrow lanes. If you do not ride, arrange a taxi to the main road entrance and walk from there.

Stay Connected. Download an Indonesia eSIM before your trip so you have data for Gojek orders and Google Maps navigation through Ubud’s narrow lanes.

Is the Ketut Liyer palm reading worth it?

That depends on your expectations. The session costs 650,000 IDR (~$36) and lasts three to five minutes. Wayan, Ketut’s son, uses recognizable patterns in his readings. It is not a deep spiritual experience. It is a moment connected to a story millions of people love. Go for the atmosphere, not the prophecy.

How do I get to the Eat Pray Love villa? The villa sits in Penestanan, Ubud. Cars cannot reach it. Taxis drop you on the main road. From there you walk about 300 to 500 meters along a narrow lane. Is the Eat Pray Love house the same as in the movie? The house is the same physical location where the Bali scenes were filmed. The interior decor has changed significantly since filming. However, the overall atmosphere, the garden, the fish pool, and the surrounding jungle views remain intact. A photo album inside the villa shows the original film scenes for comparison.
